Casuals were invited to Libya by Mr F.L. McHenry, the Advisor to the Director of Personnel of the Federal Government of Libya and an old London Caledonian on behalf of the Olympic Committee of Tripolotania. The club was the first foreign side to visit Libya since independence was granted in 1951 by the United Nations. A warm welcome greeted the club and through out the tour generous hospitality was extended spontaneously. The tour party left England on 1st April 1953 when the group assembled at Kensington Air Station. After stopping in Nice and Malta the group arrived at Castel Benito, the airport serving Tripoli. The first day was spent meeting local dignitaries including the Mayor of Tripoli and the Wali of Tripolitania. The first game was to take place the next day (Friday) when Tripolotanian Arab were to be played. The team that day was D.Bunyan, R.Cowan, D.Newton, G.Shuttleworth, D.Eastland, D.Palmer, F.Palmer, D.J.Insole, G.Weatherly, J.Dutchman, L.Boardman. After a good start, Casuals found themselves behind to a headed goal by Zentuti. A further goal was added, before John Dutchman scrambled a goal after half time. The hosts however got a late goal to run out comfortable winners. Saturday was a free day and most people spent it as guests of Tripoli Golf Club in the morning, before a trip to Sabratha an old Roman town. Hubert Doggart proceeded to try and entertain the party from the stage with a passage from Julius Caesar, despite cries from the audience that he should be thrown to the lions! The second and last match of the tour was against Tripolitanian Football Federation XI on the Sunday. The side that represented the club that day was D.Bunyan, R.Cowan, D.Newton, G.Shuttleworth, J.Wragg, J.Platt, F.Palmer, D.J.Insole, J.Dutchman, H.Doggart, D.Palmer. The game was a happier experience for the tourists and they had now become accustomed to the unusual playing conditions and the later kick off helped undoubtedly. Half time arrived with the scores goal less, but after the break Hubert Doggart scored the winner The party departed the following day and arrived back in England on the 7th April 1953.

This is the report given in the programme after their return - Last Saturday morning 14 Englishmen - 12 players and our coach Doug Flack and 'Tiny Liddle' left Victoria for France - to be more precise - 'Paris'. The Club, under the guidance of David Harrison, who at the moment is working in Paris, arranged to play an International Tournament against French, German and Luxembourg opposition. Our first match was on Sunday afternoon against the hosts of the Tournament, Puteaux, a club that is hoping this year to enter the National League of France. Playing in front of their home crowd, it was not surprising that Puteaux was anxious to get an early lead, but thanks to Chris Joy and company their efforts were thwarted and after 20 minutes it was the Club that scored first through Tyrell. Our lead unfortunately was short lived and from a corner from the left a hard cross found their right winger who scored a great goal on the volley. With the game swinging from end to end Cutler again put us in the lead when he chased a half chance down the middle, dribbling round the goal keeper and scoring from an acute angle. With the excitable French crowd now becoming a little anxious Puteaux replied with an equaliser just before half time through a bad defensive mistake. With the first ten minutes of the second half we had most of the play, but again due to a mix up in the penalty area Puteaux went into the lead, followed quickly by their fourth goal. With the home crowd now shouting on their side, it took a lot of spirit to get back into the game, but this we did when Edge hit a good goal just outside the penalty box. It was now all out attack and we were very unlucky not to have equalised. Unfortunately this all out attack policy left our defence weak and Puteaux scored their fifth goal just before the final whistle. By losing this game we could not reach the final of the Tournament, but never the less it was a very enjoyable game, and the lads were given a great ovation on leaving the field. After a hectic night and an early morning in Paris we assembled for the final game against a German side called Offenbach - the losers of the other semi final. Our side now included Ackers for Clarke who was not feeling too well and David Harrison for Turnbull. This game was not up to the standard of previous football played, possible due to the 'evening in Paris' but it was a game we won by 5 goals to 3, with Ackers scoring a hat-trick. Our other scorers were Cutler and Edge. The result of the Tournament was a victory for the home side - Puteaux - who won the final 3 goals to nil, against another French speaking team. After a little arithmetic of goals for and against it seems we should have been in the Final. So for our unlucky cup draw! The trip home was quite eventful. At the Stadium we were joined in the coach by a hand ball team of Belgian girls, also on their way home, who promptly burst into song, using English words which we can only imagine were used by our soldiers during the last war. The Channel crossing, as usual, was rough and no one hand much sleep. By the time we reached Victoria on Tuesday morning most of us were feeling a little under the weather and a number of telephone calls were made to various offices asking for time off.

New Paltz University 3 Corinthian-Casuals 5

Casuals started their Tour of the USA on a high note. The New Paltz team were fit and coached by former Casuals player Rob Bruley. The game was played in tropical conditions and this affected the Casuals a great deal, and they only really got going when the temperature cooled down. Cliff West had an early effort on two minutes from a Jamie White cross. Seven minutes later a Simon Shergold freekick was headed past Brett Benites by West for the opening goal. Casuals could have extended their lead on 14 minutes when Kevin Glavey turned Brian Sardella before squaring to West who shot wide. A minute later New Paltz were level after Adam Peake volleyed the ball past Rob Bruley. On 17 minutes Rob Bruley was called into action again when he was forced to save from Josh Elohim. Casuals came back at New Paltz with West, Leslie, Glavey and White all having efforts which went narrowly wide. This was the last Casuals pressure for sometime as the heat got the better of them. It was all New Paltz until halftime and they should have gone infront on 35 minutes when the strong and determined Josh Elohim blasted wide. A minute later Kevin Glavey gave the ball away and Josh Elohim picked it up and burst through the Casuals defence. He then unleashed a 20 yard curling shot which beat Bruley at the far post. A minute later he could have scored again but instead sent his volley strainght at Burley. With three minutes left in the first half a long ball forward by New Paltz, was touched on by Mark Freeborough. This deceived John Russell-Smith who could only watch as John Baker raced past and rolled it under Bruley. The Casuals did manage to pull a goal back by halftime when a wayward shot by Paul Doyle, was rammed home at the back door, by Kevin Glavey. The second half started with an early shot by Roland Townsend for Casuals and one by Jesse Fellus for New Paltz. On 50 minutes Orah Elohim ran past Mark Freeborough, fortunately for Casuals Dave Roberts made a great saving tackle. Casuals began to wake up on the hour mark. Paul Doyle shot wide on 62 minutes, as did Roland Townsend moments later. The scores were level on 67 minutes when Kevin Glavey was brought down. From the spot he converted. The Casuals began to find their momentum mainly coming from Tony Leslie down the right wing. He managed to have a hand in most the Casuals attacks from here on in. He also managed to nut meg the New Paltz left back on three occassions. On 77 minutes a quick throw by Leslie set up Paul Roberts who saw his attempted lob just go over. Casuals were in front though after 82 minutes when Leslie found the badgering Jamie White with a pin point 40 yard diagonal pass. White smashed in the winner. The scoring was complete on 90 minutes when Leslie put Ian Waghorn away. He got as far as the six yard box before colliding with the keeper. West though was lurking and scored the fifth to seal the victory. All in all it was a good job done by the Casuals in tough conditions, against a very enthusiastic New Paltz side.

Dawn to Dusk Tournament - Lake Placid

Dawn to Dark is a 20 team 6 a side tournament held in Lake Placid. The 20 teams are split into four groups of five. The top three teams from each group all qualify for the play offs. It is held in the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Ice Hockey Stadiums which are converted for the tournament. The games all last 25 minutes and go from 8am until 11pm. The Casuals found themselves in Group D and opened their account on Friday morning against Jimmy's. A 1-1 draw resulted, Larry Ryan created the opening for Jamie White to score. The Casuals dominated this match, but naivety in the rolling substitutions rule cost them dearly as Jimmy's equalised with just 14 seconds left on the clock. Casuals next match took place at 9.30pm on Friday night against one of the favourites Coliseum. Casuals went down 0-2, with the goals coming in the 14th and 19th minutes. Both sides finished the match with 4 players due to the sin bin rule. Saturday saw a marked improvement in the Casuals form. In the morning they faced the Connecticut Bombsquad and recorded their first victory in the competition so far. Waghorn set up Glavey on 12 minutes for the opener. The second was provided by Paul Roberts and finished by Roland Townsend on 21 minutes. The game finished 2-0 and guaranteed Casuals a place in the playoffs. Casuals were not content with just qualifying for the next round and this showed in the 2-1 win over Creed. Ian Waghorn scored both before Creed replied with just 1 minute and 20 seconds left on the clock. This win meant the Casuals qualified as fifth seeds. The Wild card round was a big disappointment for Casuals as it was played at 8am on Sunday morning after the big reception at the Lake Placid Hilton the night before. Casuals exited the competition going down 0-4 to Psychodelic Emporium, with Dave Roberts scoring an own goal.
