Late disappointment was the order of the day for Corinthian-Casuals as they succumbed to a last-ditch onslaught from a visiting Bognor Regis Town after a game that saw both sides create chances aplenty and left both sets of fans bemused as to how it only finished 2-1.

With temperatures finally beginning to rise, there was a full catalogue of fixtures in the Isthmian League Premier Division for the first time since 7 January. With everyone hoping the worst of the winter weather was behind us, we kicked off for a game that would more than make up for lost time. After an unsuccessful trip to Herne Bay last weekend, the Casuals made one change to their starting line-up as Zack Chislett reclaimed his position in place of Malakai Hyman in a starting XI that contained three former Bognor Regis players, in the form of Sam Dowridge, Finlay Lovatt and Shola Ayoola.

The opening moments signalled the frantic nature of the game to come as the hosts produced the first efforts on goal. Joe Halsey’s early probing run saw him cut inside from the left flank and deliver a strike that forced a diving save from Killian Cahill. Barely a minute later it was Dowridge’s turn, this time from the opposite wing, as his tricky stepovers and subsequent driven effort brought a smart, reaction stop from the visiting goalkeeper.

But the early optimism for the home side was swiftly muted as the visitors solidified their defensive shape, brought themselves into the game, then opened the scoring. Only a moment after centre-back Cameron Black’s headed effort was ruled out by the officials, Nathan Odokonyero made the breakthrough. Picking up the rebound after Dan Gifford’s shot on the turn had smacked the crossbar, Odokenyero was able to pick his spot and beat Callum Coulter to give the away side the lead in the sixth minute.

Justin Fevrier’s Casuals didn’t allow that opening blow to deflate them, though, as the end-to-end nature of the game continued. Still with less than 10 minutes on the clock, the hosts won a corner and Luke Stokoe’s in-swinging effort had too much on it for the visitors to properly clear. Simba Kudyiwa rose highest as a sliced attempted clearance dropped back into the box, his standing jump enough to reach the ball first and deliver a clean headed effort that rattled the underside of the crossbar before sneaking over the line. The centre-back’s first goal for the club brought Casuals back level in the breath-taking opening exchanges.

To the disappointment of those in the crowd, the game looked to finally have begun to settle as both sides took a breather and regained their composure. Ayoola had the best chance for the hosts when his run was picked out brilliantly by Ricardo Thompson who chested down and released his team-mate with a looping ball over Bognor’s defensive line, but the striker’s effort sailed over the bar.

With that, the Rocks began to take control. Black’s ariel ability again caused problems, nearly giving the visitors the lead after he met a floating Walter Figueira corner and headed downward, only to be denied by Coulter’s right hand and a last-ditch clearance as we went into the break with the score at 1-1.

If there were any concerns that this game would fizzle out in the second half, they were quickly dispelled when Isaac Olaniyan forced another save within seconds of the restart. But if the home fans thought they’d ridden their luck when Coulter parried away the long-distance effort, they may have struggled to believe what came after. A training ground routine from a wide free-kick that skimmed across the floor allowed a shot on goal which struck the outside of the post and landed back at the feet of Harvey Whyte who this time elected to launch the ball into the box for Odokonyero to meet. His headed strike was again pushed away by Coulter but only onto the onrushing Regis man whose first-time effort rattled the underside of the bar and gave a grateful Casuals side the chance to finally clear the danger.

It was an electric game as brilliant bits of individual skill and 50-50 challenges constantly had the fans up on their feet but neither side was able to convert their chances and take the lead as we approached the 70th minute. But that breakthrough nearly came for the Casuals, when Lovatt’s outside of the boot pass found Dowridge, who again forced his way into the box before unleashing an effort on goal that was sharply deflected, initially looking to have wrongfooted Cahill, only for the goalkeeper to readjust and thrust out a strong right palm to parry the ball away.

It seemed clear that the decisive blow was still to come in this game, though. First, Bognor Regis substitute Matthew Paterson was able to turn his man on the edge of the box, only to be denied by the onrushing Coulter. The loose ball fell to Odokonyero but he somehow contrived to hit the post before Halsey cleared off the line, somehow keeping the scores level. But the Casuals’ luck finally ran out in the 86th minute as Patterson, who had given his side the ascendancy since coming on, was picked out by fellow substitute Alfie Bridgman and this time he was able to beat Coulter with a textbook header from the penalty spot which took a small deflection past the Casuals keeper and into the net.

With spirits dampened, one final Casuals chance presented itself before full-time. Halsey’s through ball found Ayoola who bore down on goal and held off the challenge, but after taking one touch too many, his left-footed effort from 10 yards was blocked and a breathless game came to a conclusion.

Casuals were left disappointed after a frustrating defeat to fellow strugglers Herne Bay on a cold afternoon in Kent.

After a promising performance away to Lewes last week, Casuals came into the game with confidence they could build on that and claim the three points, while Herne Bay were looking to put together a run of form after a 3-1 victory against Bowers & Pitsea last time out.

On a day when six games were postponed in the Isthmian Premier League due to frozen pitches, the two teams walked out onto the newly laid 3G surface, with Justin Fevrier making one change to the starting XI from last week as Ricardo Thompson returned from injury.

Casuals got off to the worst possible start after two minutes when the ball made its way to Mason Saunders-Henry, who drove forward on the left and squared the ball to Rory Smith at the far post, where he converted from close range to put his side ahead.

The hosts continued to put pressure on the Casuals backline and should have got their second after Marcel Barrington got the better of Sergio Uyi, before finding Kymani Thomas one-on-one against Callum Coulter. However, his effort was well saved by the Casuals stopper, who was called into action again to keep out a long-range effort from the lively Saunders-Henry shortly afterwards.

After a slow start to proceedings, Casuals started to keep possession and looked to break down the Herne Bay defensive shape as the half wore on. The visitors almost got the equaliser when Joe Halsey's looping cross found Sam Dowridge at the far post, but his effort was cleared off the line by a Herne Bay defender. The chances kept coming for Casuals, though, and another excellent passage of play found Shola Ayoola in the box, but he looped his header just over.

Casuals got their deserved equaliser just after the half-hour mark, when a corner found Ayoola at the front post, and he bounced a header in off the crossbar to get his first goal for the club.

However, the hard work to get back in the game was soon undone after a mix-up at the back saw Smith drive forward, before the ball made its way to Thomas to calmly slot home and put the hosts ahead going into the break.

At the start of the second half, Fevrier replaced centre-back Malakai Hyman with Reuben Collins, who was making his first appearance since overcoming an injury, and the early stages of the second half were closely contested with the Herne Bay defence remaining compact, not allowing any chances for the visitors.

However, Casuals kept searching for an equaliser and had a great opportunity to level after Ayoola ran through on goal but saw his effort fly just wide. Casuals continued to probe forward and substitute Collins headed a well-taken Dowridge free-kick just over.

Casuals soon found themselves with a mountain to climb after a goal out of nowhere doubled the deficit and surely sealed the game for the hosts. Saunders-Henry drove forward on the left, cut inside and curled his effort into the top corner from distance.

Despite being pegged back, Casuals continued to dominate possession and put crosses into the box, but failed to get any decent contact on those deliveries to get back in the game.

Overall it was a tough day at the office for Fevrier’s side, who at times kept the ball well but struggled to put any pressure on the hosts defence test the goalkeeper, Jordan Perrin. Herne Bay, however, attacked with pace and quality in wide areas with Saunders-Henry providing a real threat all afternoon to help claim the three valuable points.

Next up for Casuals is a home game against Bognor Regis on Saturday, when Fevrier’s side will be hoping to bounce back quickly and continue the fight for survival.

Casuals were left frustrated after a spirited performance ended in a 2-0 defeat to a composed Lewes side on a dark Saturday afternoon on the south coast.

After a difficult defeat to Haringey Borough last time out, Casuals headed to East Sussex to take on an in-form Lewes side at their evocatively named ground, The Dripping Pan. The hosts came into the game full of confidence following a 3-0 victory at fellow play-off chasers Bishop Stortford. Meanwhile, Fevrier made two changes to the Casuals line-up, which included debuts for Finlay Lovatt and Shola Ayoola.

Casuals started on the front foot and got in behind the Lewes defence early, with Sam Dowridge driving in a low cross which just got away from the outstretched Ayoola in the box. However, it was Lewes who made the breakthrough after Casuals gave the ball away in the penalty area, following an excellent high press from the hosts. Deon Moore won the ball and found striker Joe Taylor, who clinically slotted home past Callum Coulter to put his side ahead.

Then followed a closely fought tactical battle in the midfield with both teams struggling to control proceedings. Lewes looked to play out from the back and Casuals pressed high, causing the hosts to go long in search of frontman Taylor.

A bizarre moment then occurred when a mysterious object landed in the Lewes penalty area, which goalkeeper Lewis Carey brought to the referee’s attention. The spectators were confused at what the object could have been, and it was to their surprise that they saw it was in fact a toy aeroplane, which the official snapped in half as he gave it to the hosts’ coaching staff. Non-league, eh!

As the game progressed, the visitors started to create chances. Dowridge’s free kick was headed just over the bar and Ayoola almost grabbed his first goal for the club but blazed his effort over. Dowridge continued to cause problems, this time cutting inside before his attempt landed over the bar.

Lightning almost struck twice, after Casuals gave the ball away in their own area and the hosts looked certain to double their advantage, but Coulter came to the his side’s rescue, smothering the ball to deny the onrushing Tarique Hyde.

Casuals almost got the equaliser with the last kick of the half after a corner was whipped in by Dowridge and was flicked on before going just wide of the far post.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with both teams looking to break their opponents down and be positive in possession. However, the hosts were gifted an opportunity to grab their second when they were awarded a penalty after what looked like a good tackle from Simba Kudyiwa on Hyde. The referee pointed to the spot to the visitors’ disbelief, and Taylor stepped up to grab his second, coolly sending Coulter the wrong way.

Lewes continued to create openings after doubling their lead, with Moore driving forward on the left and drilling in a low cross which was blazed over from close range.

Casuals, undeterred, kept creating opportunities to break down the solid Lewes defence with some excellent passing sequences and Tom Jackson came close to pulling one back when he tested Carey from outside the box.

At the other end, Coulter was then called into action, producing an excellent save to deny Lewes skipper Tom Champion’s header, tipping it onto the bar and out for a corner.

The visitors were inches away from halving the deficit and forcing a grandstand finish when Luke Stokoe fired his effort off the inside of the post and the rebound was cleared by the Lewes backline.

In the final stages, Fevrier then gave a senior debut to 17-year-old William McDonald, who was called up from the youth section’s Under-18s squad. The youngster showed potential in the short period of time he was on, winning his side a corner with one of his first touches before the full-time whistle was blown.

All in all, it was a hard-working performance from Fevrier’s side, who at times showed real drive and promise in possession in front of a large vocal crowd.

“I thought we played really well,” the Casuals boss said after the final whistle. “I was actually really proud of the boys and we mixed it against a really good Lewes team.”

In the end, Lewes showed why they are looking to claim a play-off place, with some excellent patterns of play and quality in the final third which took the game away from Casuals.

Despite the defeat, Casuals should take a lot of confidence from the game after competing with one of the strongest sides in the division and will look to build on the performance on Tuesday night when they host Horsham.

Casuals suffered their first league defeat of 2023 with a frustrating 2-0 loss to a well-organised Haringey Borough side on a gloomy and miserable afternoon in Tolworth.

Casuals came into the game full of confidence following a triumphant victory away to local rivals Kingstonian, while Haringey were looking to bounce back from a defeat to Enfield Town over the festive period. Seeking to build on the win, Casuals manager Justin Fevrier gave two debuts, to defender Sergio Uyi and winger Reon Donkor, as well as a return to the starting XI for striker Nat Pinney.

On an afternoon where flags were lowered to half-mast in honour of Brazilian legend Pele, the two teams battled it out for the three points on a dark and wet early January afternoon at King George's Field in what proved to be a tough game for the hosts.

The opening stages were tightly contested with both teams looking to impose their patterns of play, with the only threat on goal coming from Haringey’s Kaylen Hinds, who put his effort off target. The visitors had another chance to break the deadlock when a strike from Christian Djamas was fired straight at Callum Coulter following a clever turn on the edge of the Casuals penalty area.

The game continued to be closely fought with both teams having spells of possession and putting in strong tackles in the midfield, one of which resulted in Casuals defender Simba Kudyiwa picking up the first yellow card of the game following a late challenge.

Haringey almost took the lead after a free-kick was whipped in by Michael O'Donoghue and headed onto the crossbar. This seemed to have woken the home side up, and they could have had a penalty after debutant Donkor looked to be brought to ground by a combination of goalkeeper Luke Mewitt and defender Scott Mitchell when bursting through on goal, but his appeals were waved away by the referee. Casuals kept creating more openings with Luke Stokoe driving in a low ball across the six-yard box that was cleared for a corner by O'Donoghue.

Despite those Casuals chances, it was Haringey that took the lead in the 30th minute after the hosts gave the ball away in midfield and it was picked up by Alphanso Kennedy. He played a through ball to Alfred Bobson Bawling, who slotted calmy past the outstretched Coulter to put the visitors ahead.

Haringey continued to build on their lead, with a flurry of corners which tested the new-look Casuals back three, although new signing Uyi and Kraig McLeod headed clear any danger. The away side almost doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when a driven cross from the right was nearly poked home by Johnny Ashman before the whistle was blown.

In an attempt to get back on level terms, Fevrier made two changes at half-time, bringing on striker Lewis Croal for Pinney and midfielder Thomas Jackson for Kudyiwa.

However, the away side continued to create chances and almost got their second, after a shot from the dangerous Djamas was blocked from close range by Uyi.

The conditions continually got worse as the rain poured onto the pitch, making it difficult for both teams to take a foothold in the game while spectators ran for cover to stay dry.

Casuals looked to get in behind the disciplined Haringey defence as Donkor continued to be a nuisance with some excellent sequences of footwork and movement in the final third, but this came to few clear-cut chances.

With the hosts pushing forward for an equaliser, Haringey found openings on the break and Bawling put his effort just wide of the post from close range shortly before the visitors doubled their lead with nine minutes remaining. Stefanos Georgiou drove forward on the left-hand side and fired low into the far corner to seal the victory, leaving the travelling supporters behind the goal delighted.

Despite the goal, Casuals still looked to half the deficit in the closing stages of the game, and Sam Dowridge looked set to pull one back until an excellent block from the resilient Haringey defence denied us any consolation.

In the end, it was a tough day at the office for Fevrier's side who struggled to create a sustained amount of pressure for the Haringey defence and goalkeeper to deal with in treacherous conditions. Despite the result, the game saw two promising debuts from both Uyi and Donkor who look to be solid new recruits for Casuals as they look to climb the table.

Next up is another important home game against Horsham on Tuesday night, before a visit to an in-form Lewes side next Saturday, where Casuals will be looking to add to their points tally following a difficult defeat.

Casuals kicked off 2023 with an excellent victory against local rivals Kingstonian to end an 11-year wait for a derby win in a closely fought affair.

We made the short trip to Morden, where Kingstonian currently groundshare with Tooting and Mitcham United, for a game which both teams came into looking to bounce back from defeats over the festive period.

The two teams walked out to a crowd of 336 at Imperial fields, wearing their away kits in support of homeless charity Shelter’s ‘No Home Kit' campaign. Casuals manager Justin Fevrier gave full debuts to striker Jack Mead and midfielder Joseph Halsey for what was a highly anticipated derby, following a tough defeat to Kingstonian in the Surrey Senior Cup in December.

Casuals almost got off to the worst possible start, as Joseph Boachie won the ball straight from kick-off and tested goalkeeper Callum Coulter with a shot from range after nine seconds. Boachie continued to be a threat in the opening stages as another effort whistled just wide.

The game was fiercely contested in the midfield, with both managers trying to work out each other's game plans. This meant the half lacked real quality and chances from both teams.
As the half continued, though, Casuals started to grow into the game with a few impressive passing sequences and crosses into the penalty area, albeit without seriously troubling the Kingstonian defence. The home side then came close to making the breakthrough after a cross from the lively Boachie was put wide shortly before the half was brought to a close.

Both managers made changes at the start of the second half in an attempt to make the breakthrough, with Nat Pinney replacing Mead up front for Casuals, while our former player Michael Abnett made way for Dwight Pascal for the hosts.

The change seemed to work perfectly for Casuals after a cross from Zack Chislett made its way to Sam Dowridge, who poked home his first goal for the club from close range to put the visitors ahead, five minutes after the start of the half. Casuals continued to put pressure on the Kingstonian backline and doubled their lead two minutes later when substitute Pinney found captain Ricardo Thompson, who fired home the second with an outstanding strike from range.

The hosts looked to mount a comeback by putting crosses into the Casuals area, but the defence and Coulter remained resolute, halting any opportunities that might have arisen.

Full of confidence, Thompson valiantly worked hard to win the ball back high up the pitch and almost created another opening after he found Pinney in the box, but the forward put his effort over the bar.

The game started to open up with chances for both teams after Coulter was called into action again, making a superb save after a header from ex-Casuals defender Danny Dudley following a corner. Kingstonian continued to put pressure on and a cross from the left skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Yet we kept pushing forward and continued to create chances, and after more excellent hold-up play from Pinney found Dowridge on the edge of the box, the attacking midfielder saw his effort blaze over the bar.

Dowridge continued to cause problems for Kingstonian and almost got his second after an excellent run forward, but saw his effort saved by the feet of Kingstonian's long-serving goalkeeper Rob Tolfrey.

At the other end, Coulter was called into action again shortly afterwards, smothering the ball at the feet of the onrushing Boachie. However, the Casuals stopper was denied a clean sheet when a cross whipped in by Chevron McLean found the dangerous Boachie, who halved the deficit to set up a thrilling end to the game.

When five minutes of additional time were announcewd, Kingstonian suddenly had belief that they could level the game and were given a great opportunity after Casuals conceded a foul on the edge of the area, for which goalkeeper Tolfrey came forward to join the attack. Thankfully for the visitors, the free-kick was well held by Coulter and the full-time whistle was blown.

It was another immense away performance for Casuals, following our recent win at Billericay Town, and this one was made all the sweeter as it brought and end to a disappointing losing streak against our local rivals. The whole team played with a sense of freedom in the second half and deserved the victory after two very well-worked goals. Furthermore, the defence was excellent, backed up by an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Coulter in only his second game for the club.

With the squad growing in confidence game by game, Fevrier's side clearly believe they can build from recent victories and climb the table.
