Casuals Pay Penalty for Late Terror Strike

Tooting & Mitcham United 2 - 2 Corinthian-Casuals
(Tooting win 4-3 on penalties)
Surrey Senior Cup First Round

Corinthian-Casuals crashed out of their second Cup this season via penalties after Tooting & Mitcham United had equalised with the very last kick of the game.

Casuals had clawed back a first-half deficit to lead 2-1 via goals from Warren Mfula and Gabriel Odunaike but a slip from Reece Hannigan in tricky conditions allowed Danny Bassett to slot home and force a penalty-shoot out.

James Bracken had understandably named a much changed line-up from the sides that had defeated Bognor Regis and Carshalton Athletic in the past week, giving valuable game time for others in his squad. In came Kev Serbony, Hakeem Adelakun, Reyon Dillon, Tommy Smith and Callum McCallister.

Perhaps it was some unfamiliarity between team-mates that led to Casuals falling behind early. Adelakun was unable to clear down his flank and Isiah Jones was on hand to place the ball to Danny Bracken’s left for the lead.

Persistent rain made for a tough playing surface as Corinth tried to get a grip on the game. The Terrors appeared to have more desire to win the encounter and threatened on a number of occasions. By contrast, Casuals had sparsely threatened. Mfula’s shot skimmed just wide of the far post and Adelakun’s free kick was beaten away by keeper Kalokoh.

The second half was a different story; Bracken introduced former Terror Juevan Spencer who caused multiple problems down the wing. It wasn’t long before Casuals were back in the game. A whipped cross found Mfula who headed home from close range. With the added introduction of Coskun Ekim and Gabriel Odunaike, it was the away side who now had the impetus. Looking threatening every time they surged forward, it seemed only a matter of time before striking a killer blow.

It looked to have been the case when Odunaike raced onto a through ball, rounding keeper Kalokoh before bundling home. Casuals had so much of the play that Tooting no longer looked a threat and the Amateurs would be in the pot for the next round.

But with a one-goal lead, anything can happen and so it did. A speculative ball, usually cleared 99 times out of 100 found Reece Hannigan wanting as he sliced his clearance straight to Bassett who ran through on goal to equalise. There was no time for a re-start and so Casuals would face their second penalty shoot-out in a month.

Keeper Danny Bracken stepped up first, having never missed from the spot – until now. His effort saved. He made amends saving Tooting’s second spot kick. But the killer blow was dealt when Jordan Clarke struck the bar. Antonio Simeone wrapped up the 4-3 shootout win to see his side progress in the competition.

We wish Tooting all the best for the competition and for the rest of the season. Casuals now turn back to league action when King George’s Arena will play host to Burgess Hill Town on Saturday.
