Against a re-arranged King Edward's side the Schools team had a convincing 6 - 1 victory at Witley on Sunday. Observing Schools F.A guidelines that boys of under 16 should not play against adults, King Edward's had felt obliged to leave out three of their regular players, supplementing them with school old boys.
The Casuals team was much strengthened, as always, by the inclusion of Graham Pearce, former Brighton and Hove professional , adding his skill and experience to the centre of defence. The team also included one of Mike Tomlinson's former pupils, Darren Walsh in goal. He's on the books at Windsor and Eton; Fred Pennell, a PE and football master at King Edward's, played in midfield. With Simon Shergold and Jamie White controlling the middle of the pitch, the team gave a measured performance that Pennell saw as a particularly good test for the boys. He commended the Casuals' passing and movement and "a lot of communication" that provided "a lesson the boys appreciated".
Even so King Edward's scored first with Tomlinson quickly equalising from a header. He then put Pratt away for Casuals' second goal, soon followed by another from Pratt, a header from a left wing cross. By half time Shergold added a fourth with a shot from outside the box. Tomlinson scored his second with a long range drive in the second half; Pratt completed his hat trick - and the scoring - with another header from a Rose centre. It was a good day for the Casuals, albeit against one of the smaller schools on the fixture list.
