Reserves Progress to 3rd Round

Our reserves team have only gone and done it again. Still in three cups, Paul Stewart's reserves side made sure progress to the third round of the Suburban League Challenge was achieved with an away 1-1 draw against Southern Counties East club Phoenix Sports Club.

Jeff Okirie, on his first game, grabbed the Casuals goal early on. Phoenix  Sports Club equalised in the last ten minutes to set up a tense finale given they needed just another goal to make it 3-3 on aggregate - obviously this did not happen with the Chocolate and Pink running out 3-2 winners over the two matches. Also making his debut was 17 year old Matthew Roberts. We welcome the two new additions to the squad and hope they enjoy playing football for this historic football club.

Next round the reserves are away to Berkhamsted - date to be confirmed. This Saturday they are at home to Peckham Town's 1st team in 1/4 final of London Senior Trophy and the following Wednesday away to Frimley Green in the quarter final of Surrey Premier Cup.

With a promising fixture calendar lend your support to Paul Stewart's side and cheer them on to victory. Come on the Casuals!

Corinthian Spirit In Full Flow

Walton Hersham 1 v 4 Corinthian-Casuals

The Corinthian Spirit was clearly evident on Tuesday evening after the Casuals left Stompond Lane with a marvellous second half performance and whilst stamping their claim as one of the form teams in the Ryman Division 1 South this 2014.

The match started slowly as both sides tested each others defence but no clear cut chance was evident. Walton & Hersham threatened on a couple of occasions but it took a handball by Defoe in the penalty area for them to get their first shot on target, Greg Andrews sending Bracken the wrong way on 30 minutes.

The Casuals best attempt of the first half came on 44 minutes when Wilson-Joseph picked up a loose ball 25 yards out and struck his shot just wide to the Swan's right hand post.

The second half kicked off with a bang. Just 3 minutes into the restart Jamie Byatt received a pass on the attacking right channel, with back to goal, 20 yards out he twisted to his left foot, placing a neat lob beyond the opposition keeper into the net whilst sending the Casuals faithful into an immediate chorus of "one Jamie Byatt".

It didn't take long for the second to come. On 55 Minutes Juevan Spencer found himself in acres of midfield space, drove towards goal, shot low and hard from the edge only for the keeper to parry it back out. It consequentially fell to Byatt who expertly dished out a thundering left footer from inside the penalty box. The third came just 5 minutes later when Hodges blasted an unstoppable left footed shot from 12 yards out after a Defoe free kick on the left channel was headed powerfully back across goal from the centre half Joe Hicks.

With Corinth in the ascendency regretfully some momentum was lost with the expulsion of Ben Bowra. He was rather unfortunate to see red desite his attempt to reach first an overhit Walton pass by diving feet in and studs showing.

Down to 10 men the Casuals never looked threatened and continued to channel their attacks. Dave Hodges did well to repeatedly charge the left flank and Byatt's continued pressing prevented Walton & Hersham any further opportunity to build sustainable combination play.

On 88 minutes, however, Byatt marvelled again and secured his hat trick. Defoe expertly chipped his free kick to Hodges down the left wing who got to the bye-line in time to drive a low cross under the keeper where Byatt was present to smash it from just a yard out. The hat trick hero's celebration saw him dart full speed cross-pitch towards now ex-Manager, Kim Harris, who was present to witness the astounding goalscorer grab his 18th goal of the season.

On an interim basis, the club is managed by General Manager Brian Adamson. Tuesday's team was led from the changing area by Tony Davies assisted by coach Luke Garrard and currently injured midfield maestro Tommy Williams.

Byatt Hat-trick Stuns Swans

A second-half hat-trick from Jamie Byatt boosted Casuals to a 4-1 away win at Walton & Hersham on Tuesday night.

Although 1-0 down at half-time, following a 30th minute penalty, Jamie crafted a stunning lob to level the scores, before firing home from a parried shot and wrapping up the scoring, tapping home from close range off a Dave Hodges cross.

Hodges scored the other goal, a cracking volley over the Swan's keeper, which takes Casuals to two wins in three and only one loss in the last five. Could the great escape be on the cards? A full match report will follow in due course. Thanks to Andy Nunn for his great photography of the game, which can be seen here.

ImagenThe Casuals Faithful
Wind, rain or Guernsey expect the Casuals faithful to be supporting our great football club. The following is impressive which serves to give our players a massive lift every week.

One visitor, Tim Lancaster, who travelled in from Somerset to sample the Corinthian Spirit got back to us with:

"Enjoyed the day at Casuals yesterday, great support from your fans, brilliant, what it should be about - Back to Somerset at 9.00pm"

Due to the terrible weather over the last couple of months Tim was anxious to know if the game was on as his train left early Saturday morning. Not only was the game played but we had one the best Saturdays for a long while. Maybe the sun does deserve a mention in the opening sentence then.

ImagenThe Preston Splash Memorial
Last week we all received the tragic news that Preston North End hero Sir Tom Finney passed away. If you remember last year in that truly memorable match at Three Bridges FC the Casuals faithful built up a strong bond with some of the Preston fans who had decided to take in the match after their league one fixture v Crawley Town was postponed.

Well, the relationship has strengthened further since then and an example of such was seeing Trevor Johnson, on behalf of the club, make the decision to place his chocolate and pink Corinthian-Casuals scarf amongst the floral tribute to England's finest. The club even included a piece on the Preston legend in our last programme edition v Merstham. See programme Gallery.

After seeing our scarf one Preston fan got in contact with us:

Dear Sir,

Today I attended the Sir Tom Finney statue and now memorial at PNEFC with my Father. My father watched England's finest ever player and my home city's greatest ever citizen many times. In amongst all the shirts, flowers and scarves from various teams amongst the land was a pink Corinthian Casuals scarf.

My sister lives in Surrey and I was really touched by the scarf. The name of Corinthian-Casuals has been raised in Lancashire and may I thank the person who left the scarf from everybody in Preston for honouring our legend.

Thank you.

On behalf of Corinthian-Casuals Football Club to fans around the UK, Europe, Brazil and the rest of the world world who support us in all the ways possible, we thank you!

Corinthian-Casuals 1 v 3 Merstham
Match Sponsor:
Man of the Match: Pico Gomez
Report by Gary Weir

Two second half goals from Merstham's Aaron Rhule was the difference between the two sides as a highly spirited, serious and enthusiastic Casuals side was pipped at the post by a formidable Merstham side.

Corinth went into the game unbeaten in the last three matches and with a host of new signings by manager Kim Harris there seems to be momentum and much optimism despite the present league standing. Although the away side took the lead against the run of play on 36 minutes through an extremely soft penalty, the Casuals came out the second half even more determined to peg one back. On 56 minutes, Casuals drew level. A neatly placed low right footed shot inside the penlaty area by Pico Gomez went beyond the keeper into bottom left hand corner, this coming after after skillful combination play down the left channel between Hodges and Byatt.

The match was even until Aaron Rule slotted home two attempts on goal within 13 minutes. The first coming on 71 minutes after a counter attack move just moments after Pico Gomez stunned the Merstham goalkeeper with a thunderous free kick from 30 yards out. Shortly after the chocolate and pink outfit also had a ball cross the line when Hodges latched onto a loose ball in the box but the referee's decision was final and no goal was awarded.

The final whistle brought much delight to the faces of the away support as it was clearly evident they had to come to King George's and met a side capable of taking points from anyone. The current low league position is clearly deceiving and with Tuesday's match away to relegation battlers Walton & Hersham there is another good opportunity to get some points on the board.

Come on the Casuals!

Yet another 200 Great British Pounds were handed out this week as part of January's Monthly Prize draw.

Winners invest as little as £1 each month for a share which helps to support the club's running costs yet creates cash prizes such as those on currently on offer. The more participants the bigger the cash prize pot can grow.

The uninspiring weather conditions over the last two months have caused havoc with the fixture schedule. This not only frustrates players, fans and officials alike but it causes concern for the club's financial obligations when home matches are postponed and converted into midweek matches.

Nevertheless, one thing the weather can't influence and that's the Monthly Cash Prize Draw. So, get involved and don't miss out February - there's still time. Fill out our online form here and in one swift move you are halfway there to supporting a national institution that is Corinthian-Casuals Football Club.

Inspirational Byatt Plans The Great Escape

Corinthian-Casuals 3 v 1 Ramsgate
Match Sponsor:
Man of the Match: Jamie Byatt
Report by Gary Weir
Match Highlights by Fox in the Box Productions

A wonderstrike from 25 yards by Jack Wadmore and a double in the second half from top goalscorer Jamie Byatt helped to secure victory last night over play-off promotion candidates Ramsgate at King George's.

Casuals introduced a number of changes for this hastily arranged midweek fixture which saw the match postponed just two weeks earlier due to the recent heavy rainfall making the pitch unplayable. In came new signing Jordan Vidal from Carshalton Athletic together with season new starts Pico Gomez and David Goddard. On the bench Daniel Llacer and James Richmond completed the list of new recruits to the club together with reservist Joe Davies, Ellis Wilson-Joseph and Juevan Spencer. Further, Jack Wadmore started in centre midfield replacing the missing Jason Turley whilst the highly experienced midfielder Tommy Williams rested the fans favourite bobby, Danny Green.

With those changes came an air of intrigue. Corinth immediately set the pace by scoring early on when a poorly cleared Ramsgate ball fell to Wadmore 25 yards out who cooly smashed a low right footed strike into the keepers bottom left hand corner. Although the keeper got a touch the power-force in Wadmore's shot gave Ramsgate's number one no chance to stop it from going in.

Upon 21 minutes, David Pilcher of Ramsgate found himself in an unusual position to draw the scoreline level. The Rams, having exploited the Casuals defensive line down our left channel and caught the centre backs napping after the resulting cross enabled Pilcher to find himself in the penalty area one-on-one with Bracken and neatly placed it low beyond reach into the net.

Heading towards half time both teams carved a couple of half chances which led to a tense final to the half. The dangerous number 9 for the Rams was usually found loitering on a few occasions on the edge of the Casuals area which allowed him a few unchallenged cracks at goal. Meanwhile, the Casuals continually threatened down the attacking left channel which provided a few openings, including a dangerous cross-box pass which unfortunately nobody was able to latch onto.

After the break, on 57 minutes Jamie Byatt added to his season tally by tapping in from close range after a wonder kick from Danny Bracken at the other end. The long ball made first impact with the ground just outside the Ramsgate box after Bracken's left footed launch and as the keeper came out to collect it bounced abnormally high against the saturated surface and over his head. Although preventing Bracken with quite possibly his first goal celebration for Corinthian-Casuals Byatt made sure the scoreline was 2-1 without further ado by advancing beyond the now highly embarrased ramsgate stopper to push it further over the line.

Just 8 minutes later, Byatt added his 15th of the season firing home a powerful header just 6 yards out after an inch perfect cross deep into the six yard box by midfield maestro Tommy Williams. It may be wondrous as to how Byatt managed to out-jump the opposition at the back post however it is definitely no surprise given his attitude to every ball in his vicinity is challengeable, and winnable.

Although just midway through the second half there was a sensation from the stand that the game had been won yet the chocolate and pink continued to limit attacks from the visiting side and still maintain attacking prowess down the channels. A double change on 79 minutes saw the introduction of new signing James Richmond for Vidal Jordan at left back whilst Juevan Spencer offered attacking options by replacing the ever-influential forward Steve Goddard. Draining any potential momentum from the opposition side late on Kim Harris made the move on 88 minutes to bring in former Harrow Borough front man Daniel Llacer to cover fellow countryman Pico Gomez.

Never at any stage during the last quarter was the result in jeopardy as Casuals retained a crucial 3 points in their scrap at the bottom of the Ryman division 1 south. With Casuals in the ascendancy, now unbeaten in three matches, and many other teams showing signs of inconsistency it looks like the plans are in motion for the great escape. Come on you Casuals!

The club would like to take the opportunity to thank the tireless efforts of Tony Davies, Brian Adamson, Brian Flynn, Brian Phillips & Roger Phillips for given up their time from 1pm to ensure last night's match was playable. Without the voluntary efforts of those mentioned above together with many more involved with the club acts such as those mean last nights victory would not have been possible. Thank you!

Were you at the match last night? Would this be the greatest escape ever? Make a comment below.

Corinthian-Casuals has a history with penalties in the beautiful game but on this occasion the football club is very proud to support the new charity campaign, "It's a Penalty", run by British based charity Happy Child International.

At Tuesday's launch in London, Club Secretary Gary Weir together with Chris Watney attended the event where Gary Lineker spoke of the need to get involved and raise awareness before the World Cup about the sexual exploitation of children.

With Gary Lineker, Frank Lampard, Alan Shearer, David Luiz, Oscar and Ramires all involved, we encourage everyone to spread the word. The club will announce "It's a Penalty" as match sponsor for an upcoming fixture soon.

As Corinthian-Casuals has great following in Brazil Club Secretary Gary Weir sees a real opportunity to help spread the message to fans both in England and Brazil. "Corinthian-Casuals is unique not just in Non-league but throughout the football league too. Our online following from Brazilians on Facebook makes us the 25th most followed club in England on this platform", commented Gary. He continues, "We have an unrivalled reach due to our historic link with Corinthians Paulista and immediately identified the need to support Happy Child's "It's a Penalty" campaign to raise awareness".

Chris Watney, current squad player and Co-Founder of Red Barrel Productions, was also present and was influential in bringing the club and charity together. Chris has identified opportunities to raise further awareness of the "It's a penalty" campaign as he continues his work on Vai Corinthians - The Film which will see the club tour São Paulo in May.
