Saturday 2nd May 2015 - 3pm Kickoff Admission: £5 plus free programme (subject to availability). Proceeds will go to the London Regiment Welfare & Benevolent Fund On Sat 2 May the Corinthian-Casuals are hosting a match on their home ground at Tolworth, k.o. 3pm, against an Army team drawn from the London Regiment. The event is to mark the centenary of a match played by a team of the club's ancestors who'd all volunteered for the services - "Corinthians under Arms" against Aldershot Command on 27 February 1915. It was one of three such matches serving Corinthians played against the Army during the war - with Corinthians one of very few clubs in the land able to field a complete team of serving soldiers. We will pay tribute to members of those teams who died in the Great War and extend the tribute to the 69 members of the Corinthians and Casuals (then separate clubs) and also to many more from the London Regiment who gave their lives. The London Regiment, volunteer soldiers of the Territorial Army, fielded an incredible 88 Battalions in the First War and suffered many hundreds of casualties. Now, in reduced numbers, their volunteers still serve in world trouble spots like Iraq and Afghanistan alongside the regular army. The London Regiment are bringing the actual football which, at the Battle of Loos in 1915, soldiers of the London Irish Rifles kicked ahead of them as they attacked the enemy lines. The match programme on 2nd May will include the original team sheet from the game v Aldershot Command and press reports of Corinthians' 4 - 1 victory in which their inside forward Flight Lt Cuthbert Brisley scored a hat-trick. He was killed in 1918 on a training flight with the Royal Flying Corps. Though it will be a solemn occasion for both sides - with the Last Post and a minute's silence before the start - Corinthian-Casuals are hoping to make the event something of a family day with stalls and refreshments; also some small sided games for club juniors before the main event. With the Mayor of Kingston as our guest of honour do come and support this unique event with Corinthian-Casuals and the London Regiment. All proceeds will go to the London Regiment Welfare Benevolent Fund (registered Charity: 1130304) There will be a second game after the main match, when Corinthian-Casuals' Schools Team/Vets will play against the club's Academy team from Glenthorne H.S. in Sutton, k.o.6.30pm.
