The resilient Corinthian-Casuals came out of Saturday’s feisty clash with mid-table side Sittingbourne as deserved winners thanks to a 3-1 victory at the windy King George’s Field, which boosted James Bracken’s pink & brown team to second in the Bostik League South table.

Before kickoff, players, officials and supporters observed a minute's applause for two great Corinthians who have recently left us; former player and Chairman Geoff Hewitson and Hubert Doggart OBE - also a great cricketer. 

Seven minutes into the game, Josh Uzun popped up at the near post to guide the ball into the back of the net as Casuals put the disappointing yet highly respectable performance at Billericay Town on Monday behind them to go 1-0 up early on. Uzun was amongst a defensive disaster for Sittingbourne; the goal was taken from Corinth’s no.7 and awarded to the hapless Lex Allen of the Bourne as an own goal due to a deflection off the centre-back. However, a goal was a goal- it was 1-0. Attacking with vigour and purpose that both mirrored and differed from the Billericay loss, Casuals were quick, exciting and ready for the challenge, but also faced a lower intensity, so it was a different type of prowess upfront. The away side seemed to falter in the offensive department until the 26th minute in which the vocal Bourne supporters that were stood behind the goal were able to cheer when Mobolaji Dawodu tucked a through ball away.

It was a blow for the Casuals after a seemingly-organised and attacking performance, but this positive mind-set drilled into their heads by the Bracken Brothers would allow them to regain the lead just three minutes later. Gabriel Odunaike was on the lookout for another goal to add to his tally following his opener at Billericay as he latched onto a superb Uzun pass to knock the ball past the intimidating Bourne keeper Otuyo- Casuals were 2-1 up, but would it last this time?

Tackles flying in from everywhere, Jordan Clarke, Odunaike and Uzun all faced tough challenges from the yellows as the referee seemed to lose control of his consistency and card distribution at the end of the first half.  It finished 2-1 at the break.

Booked during the first 45, Serbony was replaced by Ben Cheklit for a straight swap in the midfield. Hoping to close the precarious one goal gap in the scoreline, the pink and brown army marched onto the search for a third goal, but were unsuccessful for a long and agonising period. Unfairly given yellow cards, Clarke and Daly were written up by the referee before one of them managed to achieve Bracken’s aim. Sixty-seven minutes in, Clarke was prodding the ball towards goal as usual, but this time his trademark set of step-overs allowed him to avoid yellow shirts and hit an effort that flew into the bottom corner from outside the area. The key was accuracy for Clarke, who had been unfortunate to not have converted earlier on, as his pinpoint shot gave Casuals the comfort of a two goal lead for the first time.

Drama arrived late on as a wonderful move and a wonderful goal was cruelly disallowed. Behind the goals, Casuals supporters were in disbelief over the incredible nature of Warren Morgan’s would’ve-been wonder goal. Pacing through on goal, Odunaike played a one-two with the oncoming Morgan before executing an exquisite backheel to nutmeg a Sittingbourne player to play in the rushing right-back again. Curling the ball into the top corner, Morgan was set to go crazy before he spotted the offside flag on the sideline and was in disbelief over the decision that announced Odunaike as the one who was off. The remainder of the match featured of failed outcomes to set-pieces and a mass scuffle in the area that somehow involved the referee to only book Jide Okimeji for a shocking tackle on Frazer Walker. When the three blows on the referee’s whistle occurred, it was finally time for Casuals to relax as the 3 points were secured.

Ashford United nicked an unlikely win versus second-placed Cray Wanderers, which resulted in Casuals to leapfrog them and take a place in the automatic promotion space. We wish Sittingbourne FC the best for the rest of the season. What’s next on the calendar for Bracken? A trip to VCD Atheltic on the 3rd March, which will mark the last ten games of the 17/18 season.

Corinthian-Casuals came close to causing a major upset taking the lead against Billericay Town – a side that’s only lost three times in all competitions all season. The Blues eventually running out 3-1 winners in the Velocity Trophy semi-final.
 
Gabriel Odunaike’s 20th minute strike was eventually cancelled out on the stroke of half time before two quick fire goals from the high-flying Bostik Premier leaders finally ended James Bracken’s quest for bringing a trophy back to Tolworth.
 
Played on a quagmire of a pitch that hadn’t held up to the day’s rain, it was surprising that the late call by the match official saw the contest go ahead. And an intriguing contest it was. Billericay, managed and funded by the exuberant headline maker, Glenn Tamplin has reputedly the highest budget in non-league. They were pitted against the amateurs of Corinthian-Casuals, who despite having a zero playing budget are pushing for promotion this season under James Bracken.
 
Fresh from playing on a heavy pitch at Chipstead on Saturday, the conditions once again wouldn’t suit Casuals’ quick, free-flowing style of football. Max Oldham was the first to suffer having to be substituted for what appeared to be a hamstring strain. Hamilton Antonio took his place in an unfamiliar wide position.
 
The middle areas of the pitch were almost unplayable and it was the Blues who came unstuck – or rather stuck at first. Danny Waldren attempted a routine pass back to Jack Giddens. However, the ball stopped dead in its tracks and first to react was Odunaike who didn’t hesitate on capitalising, striking low and hard into the bottom corner to send the travelling faithful into raptures.
 
Ricay found more success in the slightly less bog-like wings, getting to the byline and crossing. A couple of attempts were thwarted, not least by Danny Bracken who made an outstanding stop to keep Casuals in front. But just before half-time, the Blues had their equaliser when new signing Liam Hughes powered home a header at the far post to what sounded like relief more than anything. Jordan Clarke had a good opportunity to once again take the lead when he danced in and around the box but with the ex-Palace winger about to shoot, the ball once again stuck firm and the chance had gone.
 
Tamplin made three changes at half time, admitting after that Casuals had given them a scare and felt forced into making the substitutions. It paid off; Casuals failed to clear a corner and Billy Bricknell, who scored a hat-trick in last year’s final turned his marker and looped a shot into the far corner leaving Bracken stranded.
 
Two minutes later and Casuals were left hanging. The instruction was clear at half-time; no back passes. So when a back pass was sold short, once again at the mercy of the pitch, Bricknell latched onto the free ball. Bracken made a fine save but could only parry to Adam Cunnington who dispatched with ease.
 
Despite conceding two goals in quick succession, heads never dropped and Casuals looked to get something from the game. Clarke had two chances near the end which both had to be cleared off the line. Nathan Daly could also have been an unlikely scorer when he found himself with just Giddens to beat but couldn’t quite connect well enough and Town’s keeper collected with ease.
 
With the full time whistle blown, the 100 plus Casuals fans showed their appreciation for the effort their team had put in against their hosts and a long cup run that’s taken them to Whyteleafe, Margate, Thamesmead and Hendon finally came to an end in Essex.  We wish Billericay the best of luck in the final and a speedy recovery to their defender, Josh Urquhart who sustained a nasty concussion and was rushed to hospital.
 
“I’m immensely proud,” said James Bracken after the match. “We’ve run them all the way. Even when they’ve gone 3-1 up, through an error of our own, we continued to push them to the end. We’ve made them play every minute of the game. I believe we’ve earned their respect and in defeat that’s all we can do.
 
“To be honest, it doesn’t feel like a loss. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a good loser. But they’re beating teams in their league by five or six goals most weeks and not lost many games. Tonight, we could’ve won that game of football.
 
“It was difficult conditions where we had to show a lot of character and a lot of spirit to go out there and dig in. Even after going behind, we’re still on the front foot taking the game to them. With a bit of luck, on another day, one or two of those that were cleared off the line go in and it’s game on.
 
“I said after the Chipstead game that we’ll have 100 to 150 behind the goal and you’ll tell after the final whistle whether we’ve done what we’re supposed to do. You could tell that we did from the reaction of the fans. 100% we done what we had to do. That speaks louder than any words I can give. If we had gone out there and not shown up, we’d never have got that reaction. I’m immensely proud of their effort.
 
“A great man once said ‘I don’t lose. I either win or I learn.’ We learned all we needed to learn about ourselves in terms of our character, spirit and desire. Not least our quality too. One criticism some might have is we don’t switch onto the conditions quick enough. We try and do things that shouldn’t be done on certain pitches, whether it be muddy, slick, windy. Tonight, as a group of young men, everyone switched onto the game plan.
 
“We’ve learned that we can mix it with teams in a higher league, with all the away ties we’ve had in this competition. To beat Hendon away, Margate away and run Billericay through the whole ninety we now know we can mix it and we can step up a gear. We need to now. Tail end of the season, we need to keep stepping up. If we do, we’ll keep winning and if we do that, we’ll be very hard to stop.
 
“The fans were fantastic. We’ve taken some stick recently for one or two incidents but when you look at our group as a whole we have an absolutely first-class set of fans. We lost 3-1 tonight and they’ve cheered us off the pitch like we won. That’s not a one-off. They do that every time. That’s what makes them unique. It’s another little facet to our club that should be applauded, pushed and encouraged. We put on what was a performance that warranted their level of support and we all support each other. As a club, you want to be as one and we very much are that. We have been for the last three years with everyone in the club. We all want the same thing.
 
“I already know we can mix it in the Premier. The Margate game, Hendon… they all tell you that. I’ve watched plenty at that level and I’m 100% confident we finish above 15 of the teams in that league. Because we’re better than them. I wouldn’t want to rebuild going up but I wouldn’t have to. Why? Because I’ll give the boys here an opportunity and a platform to go and play higher which is what we need to do now. Now is the time and we need to make sure we embrace it. If we do go up, we can touch playoffs. Top eight and if we can put a run together, we could touch the playoffs. I’ve seen the teams in and around the playoffs and with respect to them, I believe we can cause a lot of sides a lot of problems.”

Chipstead 1 - 2 Corinthian-Casuals

Shaun Brown’s satisfying tap-in in the 90th minute and Max Oldham’s terrific finish in the final minute of added time secured a theatrical late comeback for Corinthian-Casuals at High Road - the home of the stodgy yet unfortunate Chipstead FC.

James Bracken’s team-sheet saw no rests and no controversial choices despite being aware of a Velocity Trophy semi-final tie versus big spenders and non-league giants Billericay Town looming before the league match in Chipstead. Andrew Herring and Coskun Ekim were selections at full-backs whilst an attacking quadruplet of Oldham, Clarke, Antonio and Odunaike set out to scare the green & white hoops of Chipstead.

It was a surprisingly warm winter’s afternoon at High Road in Surrey as the mid-table Chips entertained the Casuals on a bumpy, worn-down surface, but it was nothing to do with the weather that affected the performances in the first-half. Little to no chances, Casuals seemed to fall flat in attack as potential opportunities seemed to be easily thwarted by the confident Chipstead back four. Casuals’ opposition were not able to beat Danny Bracken either until the 20th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Nathan Daly was given a yellow card for a collision in the area and Leon Lalor-Dell was the dispatcher from 12 yards. A convincing penalty kick from the no.11 had put Chipstead 1-0 up, and Casuals 1-0 down.

The rest of the first half could be summed up in a single word. Dire. James Bracken’s side were not testing the away team’s back four enough for the chance of the equaliser and it was the same for Chipstead, who couldn’t get their second and deciding goal. The referee then signalled for half-time as encouragement from the good dose of Casuals supporters hoped to improve the dreary performance from the Tolworth side.

Injected with the energy of the half-time team talk from the Brackens, Corinth had a brilliantly frantic and passionate spell where Michael Sibley’s defence were apprehensive of the approaching waves of attack. It was brief, but showcased the fact that Casuals were able to break Chipstead. It was an agonising wait until evidence for this showed up as efforts from substitute Shaun Brown, Herring and Clarke kept the hosts busy. Moments after the fourth official signalled four minutes of injury time, Coskun Ekim ventured from his defensive position to have a shot at goal and it was powerful enough for Sibley to drop, which made the ball fall into the path of Shaun Brown perfectly. The striker tucked the chance away with ease and whilst the Chipstead players appealed for offside, the referee turned them down. 1-1 at the death!

Brilliant scenes in the previously-tense away end, Casuals supporters found themselves willing on their team to do the unthinkable and grab the winner. With the clock ticking down, the Chips decided to try and counter attack Casuals with men rushing forwards. This hampered their defence; James Bracken’s side had countered the counter! Odunaike was fed the ball and poised to shoot when he was clean in on goal, but a remarkable sliding tackle swept him off his feet at the last moment. Luckily, Oldham was there to pick up the pieces. The Eminem lookalike took a generous touch into space on the right flank before composing himself and aiming for the far left corner that Sibley thought he had covered. An equal amount of power and accuracy in a single shot had directed the ball straight into the desired corner as Oldham recognised his heroics with an epic removal of the t-shirt. Incredulous scenes ensued as the pink, brown, blue (our keeper Danny Bracken) and black (assistant coach Jon Williams) piled on top of the overwhelmed Oldham. Meanwhile behind the goal, the supporters were in hysterics over the superb last-second finish from the no.11 and had rushed across the away end in celebration.

It was a jubilant four minutes that had seen Casuals score twice in added time to win the game and beat the downtrodden Chipstead. Man of the moment Max Oldham received a second yellow card after the goal due to his insane celebrations and will miss the league fixture next Saturday.

At full-time, Corinthians had one last period of celebration as the players and staff exchanged thank-you’s behind the goal following the monumental away effort. It had been a heart-stopping climax to a disappointing game overall- Casuals were in 3rd with an extra three points in the bag. We wish Chipstead FC the best of luck for the rest of the season. After the excitement of Oldham’s last-gasp winner, Casuals would have to calm themselves for the trophy clash versus Bostik Premier Division side Billericay Town on Monday night before Sittingbourne arrived at King George’s on Saturday 24th.

"Those goals could be massive come the end of the season", said Manager James Bracken following the win. "It could be 100% the difference.
 
"We were poor today. There’s no dressing that up. The pitch didn’t help but that’s no real excuse. From start to finish, we couldn’t put passes together.
 
"Don’t get me wrong, we’re happy we’ve won – you have to be when you score two late goals like that when you’re trying to push for promotion. But I don’t think I’ve ever changed player’s positions so much in one game, because nothing that we tried was working.
 
"But this is football. The pitch is a bog, we’ve got people shouting at the referee from the first minute for nonsense and it descends into what it is. Non-League football. Not everything can be beautiful. Today we just got the job done.  
 
"The individual, technical quality of our play wasn’t there so we changed it up, seeing if we can just create something. Ultimately, we’ve done something right and given Max the freedom to get into the box unmarked and got us the win.
 
"The key point for us was the first goal. There was no relief when we’d scored it. We didn’t think we’d dodged a bullet and gained a point. It was very clear that there was two more points to get and one more goal gets us those. As we always do, we went for it. We weren’t content with nicking the draw… we’ve nicked the win. That comes from our positive attitude.
 
"It’s a feeling of relief more than anything and keeps us going. It’s only one defeat in fourteen matches now so we’re doing alright.
 
"I’m sure there’ll be more ugly wins this season. We haven’t had many easy wins all season.
 
"If we win this league or get automatic promotion, I’ll think of it as a bit of a miracle. We’re still not firing at our top level. The nice thing is, you know they’ve got it in their locker. These lads can step up a gear. They’re capable of getting to a level of performance that other sides can’t match.
 
"We’re doing what we have to do, to get the wins. Obviously today wasn’t the plan to do it.
 
"It would help to have one or two back, which we’ll hopefully have very soon. We’ve not got a big injury list now but just a couple of key players returning will help the way we play. Then we can kick on."

Corinthian-Casuals 2 - 0 Horsham

Corinthian-Casuals continued to heap pressure on their promotion rivals with a solid 2-0 win over mid-table Horsham on a heavy pitch at King George’s.
 
First half goals from Jordan Clarke and Gabriel Odunaike were enough to seal three points in a performance that never saw them under any real threat from their opponents.
 
In fact, the biggest threat to James Bracken’s side picking up three points was the weather; volunteers worked hard all morning to ensure Casuals didn’t suffer their first postponement of the season and an early inspection was passed. However, persistent rain meant that by kickoff, some wondered if the game would last the full ninety minutes.
 
Horsham and Corinth had equally traded wins over the last six contests between the two sides and if the trend was to be maintained, this would be a victory for Dom Di Paola’s Hornets. It had the potential to be one of those days where the playing surface would negate any gap in the league standings and act as a 'leveller' between the teams.
 
As expected, conditions weren't easy for any of the players but despite this, both teams looked to take the initiative. Horsham, with the strong wind on their backs pressed hard to gain an early foothold. Casuals threatened too and Jordan Clarke was only thwarted by Joe Shelley who got a vital touch to put the striker’s chance out for a corner.
 
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Odunaike sent a cross field pass to Clarke who cut inside and unleased a 20 yard curling shot that left Josh Pelling in goal no chance. With the cameras of FIFA’s weekly TV show set behind the goal, there’s every chance that Clarke’s effort could be broadcast to 150 countries across the globe.
 
Ten minutes later, Odunaike added his name to the scoresheet. Max Oldham raced through and although his shot was partially-blocked by Steve Metcalf, the resulting deflection wrong-footed Pelling and Odunaike pounced to put the ball into an empty net. Horsham players protested for offside though Odunaike had been behind play after Oldham had struck his shot.
 
Casuals had the bit between their teeth and Jack Strange could’ve made it 3-0 but steered his header wide. Ben Cheklit’s seering run into the box was only ended by a last ditch interception at the far post. Horsham had their chances too, with Joe Shelley’s header only thwarted by the upright.
 
By the second half, the playing surface was cutting up badly and the rain continued to fall. Casuals, now with the wind in their favour never truly looked in trouble, despite a couple of scares. Danny Bracken saved well from substitute Alfie Rogers who struck his shot straight at the keeper.
 
Chances fizzled out for both Casuals and Horsham as legs clearly became as heavy as the pitch. Callum McAllister’s improvised overhead kick would’ve been spectacular had he kept it down, instead coming closer to the car park than Pelling’s goal. Cheklit probably deserved a goal of his own but Horsham’s stopper scuppered that expertly saving from a vicious drive by the midfielder from 20 yards.
 
Caked in mud, soaked in rain but delighted with the win, Casuals march up to 3rd in the table. Keeping another clean sheet, James Bracken’s side have now only conceded 3 goals in the last nine league matches – a feat that could help them win promotion yet.
 
“We’re pleased with the three points even if the state of the pitch now is not great,” said Manager Bracken after the match.

“It was always going to be the case with the weather we’ve had and it was a bit of a leveller, especially for the first 25 minutes. It took us a while to get to grips with just how slippery it was. That was beyond wet!
 
“Boys were sliding around everywhere and Horsham were putting the ball forward quickly which caused us a few problems in the first period. Though we haven’t been threatened too much, we took that time to get going ourselves. We settled down, scored a couple of decent goals and perhaps could’ve added to that. Second half, we pretty much controlled the game. We need to turn some of that possession into goals.
 
“Another clean sheet. I’m watching these games and I’m not sure where our opponents are going to score from. We look so solid that I think teams will have to do well to score and very well to score twice. If we can get a couple of goals a game then we’re going to be very hard to beat.
 
“The result puts a bit of pressure on the others around us. Hopefully one or two will slip up as Greenwich did today, with a shock result. But that will happen. The teams through the mid-table can beat those at the top. What’s more, the top sides have all got to play each other.
 
“Billericay in the semi-final of the trophy will be a good test. It’s a fantastic achievement to get to the last four of a competition that had 70-odd entrants in, without a budget is good. We didn’t enter it to just get this far though. I want to win it.
 
“Some of my team selections in the Trophy have been opposed from some of my management team who’s questioned as to why we are risking players when the league is the priority. Why? Because we can win this. We could’ve made more changes but chose to select a side that could win every time. We’ll do that again and hopefully put ourselves in a cup final.
 
“Here, we can win this league, achieve automatic promotion and make history for this club. We could win a double and who doesn’t want to be involved in that? If anyone doesn’t, then they’re in the wrong sport. It’s going to be an exciting few weeks.”

Ashford United 0 - 1 Corinthian-Casuals

Corinthian-Casuals’ trip to Ashford United resulted in a 1-0 victory as a compelling performance and super sub Max Oldham’s slick finish in the first-half gave the visitors a satisfying three points at the rainy Kingsnorth Stadium in Kent.

Since last week’s late drama versus Faversham Town that saw super Jordan Clarke dispatch a brilliant last minute penalty, Casuals have made advancements with Kingstonian FC over a possible ground sharing deal at King George’s, drawn a Velocity Trophy semi-final tie at non-league giants Billericay Town and prepared for an away fixture versus Ashford United. Kingstonian and Billericay would have to wait as Casuals travelled to home of the Nuts & Bolts, who sit in 21st in the Bostik South table. On this particular afternoon at the artificial pitch of Kingsnorth, the rain seemed to bucket down in periodic showers but a much bigger and much more powerful storm was awaiting the quiet town of Ashford- James Bracken’s Pink & Brown army.

Only one change was made from the 1-0 Faversham win as Warren Morgan was replaced by Coskun Ekim at full-back. Referee Jamie Wells kicked the game off with a blow of the whistle; the chocolate and pink of Casuals clashed with the yellow and green of Ashford. Terrific support from Corinth early on and throughout the match certainly boosted the Tolworth side’s eleven as Gabriel Odunaike’s flashing tap-in flew past keeper George Kamurasi and fired off the post agonisingly. Like the Faversham game, Casuals seemed to dominate from the start with a wayward Frazer Walker shot the highlight. In the 23rd minute, Reyon Dillon sustained a nasty injury and wasn’t able to continue. Applauded by the Casuals contingent, Dillon left the pitch in pain and irritation whilst a new signing made his debut for the Casuals… the rapper Slim Shady! No, it wasn’t the real Slim Shady, it was actually Max Oldham, who had dyed his hair blonde and was greeted onto the pitch by chants from the Casuals fans likening his new look to the American rap artist.

Sixteen minutes after the unfortunate early substitution, Oldham was pacing down the wing after being fed a great pass and the no.12 hit a superb low shot that edged past the Ashford no.1 and ended up in the bottom left corner. Nestling into the back of the net, the Casuals supporters surged towards the celebrating away team and sang Shady’s… I mean Oldham’s… name again and again. It was 1-0 Casuals thirty-nine minutes in, and deservedly so.

Switching sides after the break, the two teams seemed to start the second-half the way they started the first- Ashford on the back-foot and Casuals on the front-foot. Oldham nearly managed to grab his second goal of the game when he tried to sneak the ball past the committed keeper but his shot was saved. At the other end, Danny Bracken pulled off an inspirational save from a free header in the box. There was only 20 minutes left when the hosts eased into control of possession and opportunities. Shomari Barnwell was inches away from an equaliser late on in the match, but his shot plummeted just past the post and into the stands.

A delayed yet dashing response from Ashford did not phase the mighty Corinthian-Casuals in the end as Oldham’s strike was enough for James Bracken’s side to steal three points and make their position in 6th comfortable. Whilst the top two teams drew, all the sides in the play-off spots won as Casuals rejected the idea of dropping points and slipping behind. The Billericay trophy fixture was anticipated, but would have to wait as a home match versus Horsham was next.

​"Pleased with the win," said Bracken after the match. "We had two hit the post and on another day, that’s three-nil and we’re comfortable. I haven’t relaxed for one minute throughout the game being held to just one-nil. On another day, we take those chances and we see the game out more comfortably.
 
"It’s given us a chance to show some resilience which other sides against us haven’t been able to show in the dying minutes of the game. So there’s positives to take, even from the negatives.
 
"We’re not happy to just settle for the playoffs. Let’s not even go there. We’re looking at Cray’s and Lewes’ results. We’ve pegged back another two points on them both.
 
"They’re one defeat away from being overtaken by us when we play them both.
 
"I don’t want to be in the playoffs. If it happens, then so be it. But I don’t want that. I want automatic promotion. I want to relax at the end of the season, put my feet up, even with a few games to spare, enjoy it and revel in it.
 
"There’s a twelve point gap from the playoff spots to seventh place which is a decent cushion to have but we wont rest on our laurels. We’re still fighting for automatic promotion.
 
"It’s cliché but we just need to win one game at a time, three points each week and make it all about us. I want every other team looking at results on a Saturday and seeing that we’ve won again and again.
 
"At the minute, we’re sixth. There’s that big gap to seventh so we’ll concentrate instead on picking our way through the teams above us. They’ll undoubtedly win in most weeks so we have to ensure we win more. With thirteen games to go, if we win ten of those including the Cray and Lewes games, we will not be far away in achieving our goal."
