Casuals miserable FA cup record continued as they slumped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Sussex County side Pagham.
Despite the good start to the season experienced Casuals fans will know this counts for nothing when the cup comes around and so it proved to be again this time around.
There were returns to the starting line up for Warren Morgan and Brandon Johnson after James Bracken suffered his first defeat in the midweek 2-1 reverse at home to Dorking Wanderers.
It was a confident start for the away side who dominated possession in the early stages and should have taken the lead in the 10th minute when Warren Morgan did well to keep the ball in and cut back from the byline but keeper Binfield was equal to Emmanuel Akokhia’s sliding effort.
Casuals continued to make all the early running and Binfield was in action again this time to beat away Josh Uzun’s fierce drive.
At the other end the home sides first chance fell to the head of Kempson but it was off target following a free kick delivery.
The visitors continued to appear the more likely to break the deadlock with the home side hanging on from set pieces especially but on 25 minutes Dan Swain nearly chipped Bracken from 40 yards with an audacious effort which the Casuals keeper did well to tip over.
This game the home side the confidence required and they came more into the game and hit Casuals with a sucker punch in the 35th minute. Dan Simmonds with 6 goals already to his name this season picked the ball up just beyond the half way line and was allowed to drive in at goal skipping past Dudley before unleashing a superb 25 yard effort low into the bottom corner past the outstretched arm of Bracken. It was a superb finish.
The game continued to swing end to end and the closest to a second goal came from the hosts with Robert Brown having a low drive just wide.
Any hopes of a dominant Casuals response were quashed in 6 minutes at the start of the second half. In the 50th minute Simmonds was again allowed to run at the Casuals backline weaving in-between two centre backs before finishing well to double the lead. It got worse shortly afterwards as a routine goal kick wasn't dealt with at the back and with Bracken misjudging the bounce Simmonds nipped in to slide home a hat-trick on what was becoming a memorable day for the striker.
James Bracken threw on Diego Maradona and Stephan Joseph for his debut and the big striker certainly gave Casuals the physical presence they had lacked all afternoon in the final third.
All hell broke loose in the 76th minute when Kevant Serbony on the receiving end of a bad tackle from Kerion Playlet-Howard reacted furiously which sparked a melee with most players involved. The two players received their marching orders with a couple of others lucky to only receive yellow.
Kaba and Joseph had shots well saved by Binfield whilst the home side continued to look dangerous on the counter. Joseph was finally rewarded deep into stoppage time with his first Casuals goal but it was too little too late and the Sussex side who were by far the better side on the day deservedly booked their place in the next round against Carshalton Athletic.
