Corinthian-Casuals 0 - 0  Dorking Wanderers
Bostik League Premier Division
Saturday 23rd March 2019
Report: Cameron Smith and Joshua Doherty. Pics: Stuart Tree (full set here).

You would have had no idea that Corinthian-Casuals and Dorking Wanderers were eighteen places apart in the unpredictable Bostik Premier; an even 0-0 stalemate at King George’s prolonged the visitor’s almost-inevitable title win, and added another point to Casuals’ search for safety.

Thirteen points separated top of the league Dorking from second-placed Haringey Borough, meanwhile only four points separated Corinthians from a spot in the relegation zone. With the mild Saturday afternoon being the seventh-last game of the season, nothing was off the table as two sides at opposite ends of the table geared up in-front of 461 buzzing spectators.

An inexplicably unfortunate 2-0 loss at the hands of Tonbridge last week was out of the minds of the Casuals contingent as, perhaps foreshadowing the performance to come, the sun shone in Tolworth whilst the players walked out. Three changes for Casuals had supporters chattering away, in particular the name of Jack Rudoni, which appeared at no.8. At just seventeen, he was set to start his first game for the Casuals since signing a professional contract at AFC Wimbledon as Hamilton Antonio was benched. Oldham replaced Osman, and Odunaike was in for Aghadiuno.

Before a ball was even kicked it was eventful as the ‘Northern Casuals’ travelled all the way from Preston to cheer on their beloved second-team, and they were in fine voice, like the rest of the support. A minute of applause was also great to see as everyone at King George’s stood and paid tribute to John Balson, a true Corinthian, who passed away last week.

It was a test of who would crack first throughout the game as James Bracken and Marc White cancelled each-other out for the opening 45. Tactics were everything; the middle of the pitch became congested resulting in few moments of quality attacking play as well as wingers finding it difficult to operate. Coskun Ekim had an effort that flew over the bar early on, which was before a full-blooded challenge involving Max Oldham wiped him out of the game. A broken collarbone and fractured jaw, the no.7 was ridiculously unlucky as he only just regained full fitness following concussion versus Bognor in January. Antonio was on after only 16 minutes. Rudoni and Ekim in midfield seemed to work a treat, and even if chances were hard to create, it did not stop the tireless Mfula chasing every loose ball and pressuring the loud but shaky El-Abd and Ray at the back. Signalling to the bench in pain, Odunaike also required attention as he grabbed his hamstring and went down whilst sprinting for the ball. The first-half had been solid but unlucky for Casuals - Jack Tucker was on for the striker.

Dorking may not have had any clear-cut chances, but it was obvious that Buchanan, McShane and Richards could be a real nuisance to the strong pink and brown back four at any point. Dorking’s attacking assets were emphasised when ex-Woking striker Giuseppe Sole was introduced for right-back Philpot at half-time. But in the second-half, it was defending that Dorking should have been focusing on. The ball was fed to Antonio on the edge of the box as he hammered a shot into the gloves of Slavomir Huk, but it was parried away and then cleared. Seeing Huk’s name on the team-sheet was not a good sight for Casuals fans, who had seen him save countless pink and brown efforts in the 2017 play-off final defeat. And he was doing it again as Huk ordered his defence well and unexpectedly came for a few dangerous crosses.

The other no.1 was also busy keeping his sheet clean- Danny Bracken got down low to save a few shots and crosses from the flanks. There was never a moments peace for Huk as the bustling behind-the-goal area were singing non-stop and nearly erupted in celebration as Mfula was allowed clean through on goal. Huk closed the striker down but the no.10 valiantly avoided going down and nodded the bouncing ball past the luminous green shirt. He chose not to shoot, and Huk was back in position when Mfula tried to tee up Antonio, but the opportunity soon dissolved. Set-pieces from both teams nearly resulted in the winner as El-Abd sliced a volley over the bar and Adelakun and Ekim’s corners were punched or cleared every time.

Battling on until the end, Casuals and Dorking could not find a break in the scrappy and inconsistent game so it ended 0-0, something Corinth would be very proud of. Celebrating behind the goal, Casuals fans could not punch the air because they finally broke their winless streak, but were able to sing a bit louder and congratulate their players because of a brilliant display against all-odds versus the runaway leaders. Thirteen point gap at the top turned into eleven for the disappointed visitors, who we wish well for the rest of the season. Jack Rudoni was handed Man-Of-The-Match and deservedly so, the midfield maestro’s first 90 minutes were regarded very highly by Corinth. Casuals had nicked a hard-earned point and managed to dominate patches of the game. A point and a clean sheet for the pink and brown army was very satisfying. A tough clash versus Carshalton was next and only six games remained as four points off relegation turned into five.

Speaking to Joshua Doherty after the match, James Bracken explained that he was pleased with his side's performance, reserving special praise for Rudoni.

“It was a great result today, and I think anyone in the bottom half would take a point against Dorking. It was a positive result considering how many points clear they are at the top, so we have to be happy with that,” Bracken explained.

He added: “We are of course fighting to get the wins we need, but this is one of those games where you see a clean sheet against them ,no soft goals and no individual errors, and be pleased with our day's work.

“Jack [Rudoni] was great as well, he deserved man of the match. I only introduced him to the boys on Thursday, and in my opinion he will play, at the minimum, League 1 level in the future. I think he is that good. He doesn't make poor decisions, and for a 17 year old to get through 90 minutes like that in a game against a team top of the league, and actually influence the game was fantastic. It is nice for him as well as it means he will get the respect from the rest of the players. Sometimes when you bring a 17 year old in from nowhere, some players may think ' why is he bringing in a kid at this stage?', but for him to go out there and do what he did, he now knows he has the confidence from the other players as well, not just myself.”

With the Tolworth-based club strictly amateur, meaning they can't pay their players, recruitment for the club has been difficult. Bracken added that he hopes having Rudoni at the club will send a good message to AFC Wimbledon, but also urged more players from professional clubs to come to the club to get first team football.

Bracken continued: “Wimbledon are happy with the move, and this is good from our part as we are happy to do right by the player to get him men's experience, it will be great for his development to get out and play 90 minutes. He will learn far more playing in these last seven or so games for us than he will playing youth football, so it is fantastic for him, great for Wimbledon, and hopefully it is a relationship we can nurture . If we do right by Rudi, and they can see he's in a good environment, hopefully this will open up some doors in the future.

“Other pro-clubs should be open-minded to this, we can't pay wages, but we can provide them a platform to continue their development in what I would feel is the right environment for a young player to develop.”

The game was slightly marred however by a serious injury suffered by Max Oldham, who appeared to break his collarbone and fracture his jaw in a first half collision, having only recently returned from a head injury which kept him out for the last two months.

Backroom staff are raising money to support the Max during recovery, details of which can be found here:

The Manager's Thoughts - Dorking Wanderers

3/11/2018

Here's what Manager James Bracken had to say following the 2-0 loss at Dorking Wanderers.

Never in a million years did we deserve to lose 2-0. We’ve ended up playing with nine men today. We’ll take a certain amount of responsibility for that but the referee has had a stinker of an afternoon.

He told me at half time, unequivocally that he was going to book seven of my players in the second half. He said this in front of his assistants. And they’re supposed to be impartial?

Mu’s sending off; the referee consulted his assistant who apparently only said ‘eight-off’ [alluding to Mu Maan’s shirt number]. They didn’t even discuss the incident, such as what was happening around. Was there cover? What was his next touch going to be? There was nothing more said than ‘eight-off’.

That’s a massive decision in a crucial part of the game and they don’t even discuss it?

It’s a joke decision though. It’s on the corner of the penalty area with a covering defender and he’s never going to score from where the foul is committed. He’s not the last man, he’s not in the middle of the goal, so why is he sending him off?

Jordan’s sending off – there’s a lunge on him in the build-up and he doesn’t give the free kick. He lets him run into another tackle where two players have tangled. He’s booked both of them for it – and it was only a tangle. Jordan’s clearly said something in frustration and he’s sent him off. The referee has taken great delight in being the star of the show and sending three players off today.

But getting back to us, we were fantastic. I said in the group huddle just now, you can play like wimps or you can play like warriors. We turned up today and played superb. Okay – we didn’t get three points but sometimes there’s more to football than just three points. That’s what that was today. Absolutely superb.

Play like that every week and we’ll win most weeks. Dorking are a good side but they got away with one today, and if they’re honest, they know that too. It would’ve been nice for everyone to have seen eleven-a-side though.

Dorking Wanderers 2 - 0 Corinthian-Casuals
Bostik League Premier Division
Saturday 3rd November 2018
Match report and photos: Stuart Tree

Corinthian-Casuals suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of high-flying Dorking Wanderers in a game that saw both sides suffer the wrath of the match officials as they claimed centre stage.

Wanderers, in their impressive new Meadowbank home sat in third place having not suffered a loss in the league since mid-August. By contrast, Casuals came into the match off the back of two Trophy defeats in the past week. Manager James Bracken was certainly looking for a reaction getting back to league duty.

Casuals started bright and Warren Mfula raced through on goal but could only steer his shot wide of Slavomir Huk’s goal.

But despite the start, Corinth found themselves behind on 15 minutes. Tom Richards raced onto a ball deep on the left and keeper Brad Comins came rushing out but found himself in no-man’s land as Richards calmly lobbed the ball over and into an empty net. It was a disastrous end to a promising start.

The amateurs had barely regrouped when Jason Prior struck with a second. The defence failed to deal with a cross and Prior was able to capitalise much to the delight of the majority of the 368 in attendance.

Casuals got their act together and began to play very attractive football. Large portions of the game were played deep in Dorking’s half but the breakthrough never came. Coskun Ekim came closest as his vicious curling shot ricocheted off the post and to safety.

Dorking’s task was to hold Casuals at bay in these periods but their task got harder when Rob Sheridan fouled Mfula as the striker was through on goal – the defender getting his marching orders.

But close to half time, Casuals found themselves also down to ten men. As Dorking launched an attack down the right flank, Mu Maan upended his attacker on the corner of the box. After a brief deliberation with his assistant, it was deemed that Maan had denied a clear goalscoring opportunity and he was also dismissed. Bizarrely, the foul had occurred in an area not clearly deemed to see such a decision made, especially with two covering defenders sweeping across the box.

The odd decisions continued into a stifled second half. Mfula had the best chance to get one back but steered his effort just wide. Jordan Clarke also saw his shot well saved by Huk at the near post.

Nearing the end and with the yellow cards clocking up for both sides, Clarke came together with Issac Philpott which saw the Casuals player receive treatment. Philpott and Clarke were both cautioned but as Clarke was leaving the field of play, Clarke was called back by the referee and dismissed him for dissent. In a game that saw five bookings and three red cards, you’d never have guessed it was played in good spirit with barely a bad challenge. If all matches were officiated in this way, football’s popularity would soon be in decline.

Supporters and players from both sides were bemused and agreed it had utterly ruined what should’ve been a good game between two sides that like to play football.

Congratulations to Dorking and they move up into second place, now unbeaten in ten league matches. Casuals remain in 16th.

Corinthian Casuals were unable to grab an agonisingly elusive equaliser as ten-man Dorking Wanderers secured a 1-0 win to add three more points to their table topping campaign.

Whilst Danny Dudley poked the ball into the Met Police net for a winning Casuals side,  Dorking crashed out of the Alan Turvey Trophy via Worthing, who struck in the 89th minute to win 2-1. Wanderers, the second youngest team in the league (founded in 1999), have enjoyed a terrific start to the season with thirteen wins to their name resulting in a position at the top of the table. Nine goals in all competitions, Casuals needed to keep their eye on dangerous striker Tom Tolfrey.

Centre-back Jack Strange returned to the Corinthians lineup after midweek absence ahead of Terry Murray, who is on loan at Sutton Common Rovers. Joe Hicks, Ben Cheklit and Shaun Brown were replaced by Josh Gallagher, Jamie Byatt and Shaun Okojie.

Constant showers of rain battered many pitches across Great Britain with a few matches in the league postponed due to the weather. However, the robust Westhumble ground was not to be beaten; an inspection was not necessary!

After observing a respectful one minute silence to remember lives lost in war, the chocolate and pink shirts of Casuals and the red and white shirts of Dorking started the game. Both sides bore the Selachii logo on their jerseys as they share the prestigious law firm as sponsors. As soon as the whistle blew, Dorking dominated. Spreading the ball to their key wingers, comfortably dealing with second bounces and creating attacks out of nothing, it was clear to see why Dorking were in first place.

Four minutes on the clock, a ricochet off a Casuals player allowed target-man Tom Tolfrey a clean shot on goal. The oncoming Danny Bracken had no chance as the on-form striker used his toe to powerfully slam the ball into the roof of the net. Wanderers were in wonderland.

Dorking did not lower their intensity as Ben Dyett’s header pinged off the crossbar. On the opposite side of the pitch, it was quiet, excluding the odd ,failed set-piece. As the first half finished Dorking littered the game with opportunities on goal, Bracken in the Casuals net was the busiest man in the ground as he managed to keep out multiple attacks. Tipping the ball over the bar after a free header at the back-post, Bracken also prevented a second goal with a remarkable double save.

With the score-line 1-0 to the Wanderers at half-time, James Bracken was forced to make a substitution. Byatt was off, Warren Morgan was on.A slight improvement, Casuals strung a few chances together but the strong defence of Dorking were not to be exploited.

The energetic Max Oldham had been suppressed until the winger struck the ball with pace from 30 yards but the target was missed. Bracken continued to make all-important saves as his heroics replicated one of a magician - somehow keeping the ball out from a goal-line scramble. Realising the late stage of the game, Casuals seemed to conjure a firm hold and fiercely attack Dorking.

Then, controversy. Dave Hodges received the ball on the left wing and was ready to sprint past Matthew Briggs until the no.8 of Dorking lunged into a horrific challenge with two feet. The unmistakable sound of Briggs’ stud connecting with Hodges’ knee echoed around Westhumble and the referee gave a straight red card. Briggs continued causing mischief; the midfielder strolling off the pitch with all the time in the world, wasting valuable minutes.

Finally, Briggs left the pitch and the game was re-started. Substitute Warren Morgan ignited a golden opportunity as the right-back surged forwards. The result was excruciating for the optimistically vocal Casuals contingent behind the goal as Warren’s effort missed the target by an inch.

The referee signalled for full-time as Dorking collected the three points. The league leaders return to Westhumble on Tuesday for local rivalry against Horsham. We wish the Wanderers good luck for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, Casuals travel to Egham Town on Tuesday evening.

Dorking Wanderers 4-1 Corinthian-Casuals
Ryman League Division One South

Corinthian-Casuals unbeaten start to the league away from home was ended in emphatic fashion as a rampant Dorking Wanderers turned on a second half attacking display which the visitors had no answer too.

Diego Maradona returned to the side whilst Ross Defoe made his first start of the season as Casuals kicked off against the beautiful backdrop of Boxhill.

After their first match on Saturday where they failed to score the returning Sekou Kaba showed quick feet early on to release Emmanuel Akokhia but the striker was crowded out by the covering defender as Casuals looks to make a quick impression on the side that had inflicted their first home defeat 2 weeks prior.

Home skipper Chris Boulter had a free header from a corner go well wide in a half of very few chances.

Casuals nearest sight of goal came in the 16th minute when Boulter's intended back pass was latched onto by Akokhia but his effort was instinctively kept out by the outstretched arm of Gary Ross in the Wanderers goal.

Few in the 112 strong crowd could have foreseen what would have happened after such an uninspired yet competitive first period.

The main catalyst for the turnaround being the introduction or former Farnborough striker Phil Page for the hosts. Within seconds of his entrance he picked the ball up 20 yards from goal and held off Murray before seeing a shot defected just wide.

He went even closer in the 49th minute with an audacious effort that had Bracken beaten all ends up. There appeared to be little danger as he and Terry Murray contested a lofted ball but with the ball bouncing down the striker spun and hooked a 40 yard volley that beat Bracken but bounced down off the ground and onto the bar before being clutched in the arms of the grateful keeper.

Skipper Bracken was equal to the frontman's effort moments later beating out a fierce drive at the near post before Josh Uzun at the other end went close after weaving into the box his shot crept just past Ross’s right hand post.

Casuals took the lead in the 56th minute when Uzun hit his second goal in 3 games finishing well from the edge of the area after cutting out a ball across his own box by Jake Hill. It was a calm side footed finish.

The game swung back and forth before the home side hit a 64th minute leveller when Luke Hackett’s shot defected past a helpless Bracken.

5 minutes later and the game had swung around completely; the visitors were dismayed when the referee awarded a very soft looking free kick 35 yards from goal. From the resulting kick Page rifled home into the far corer and the league newcomers were infront.

A shocked Casuals responded well and Akokhia saw another deflected drive just wide after cutting in from the right as they looked to level the match. Those hopes were dashed however with 10th minutes remaining when Uzun’s night took a turn for the worse when he was harshly adjudged to have handed Kevin Terry's goal bound effort on the line. Page dispatched the penalty to see his side two goals and a man to the good.

To rub salt into the wounds a 4th goal was added deep into stoppage time as Page’s right wing cross was emphatically tucked away by another substitute Shaun Findlay.

White’s Wanderers End Casuals’ Unbeaten Start

Corinthian-Casuals 1 - 2 Dorking Wanderers
Ryman League Division One South

Dorking Wanderers came from a goal behind to maintain their unbeaten start to the season but end Corinthian-Casuals good start to the Ryman League campaign.

Before the season started, many wouldn’t have tipped the two Surrey sides to be occupying the top spots or to have remain unbeaten after four games. James Bracken’s Casuals had only conceded two goals in five games (one from a penalty) and Marc White’s Wanderers had impressive wins under their belt and were coming off the back of a credible draw away to last season’s playoff finalists Folkestone Invicta. Something had to give…

Bracken made three changes from the 2-1 win over Ramsgate; in came Warren Morgan for Josh Uzun, Niall Wright replaced Brandon Johnson and although Emil Salama was named in the original lineup, an injury during warm up ensured Diego Maradona donned the number 7 shirt instead.

The first half was played at a good intensity by both sides. Wanderers had the first real effort when a 20 yard shot was deflected just over by Danny Dudley. At the other end, Juevan Spencer once again looked lively and gave the first test of the night to new signing Gary Ross in Dorking’s goal. Ross was to be one of the key reasons for White’s men walking away with the three points.

However, errant half chances didn’t help Casuals’ cause; Sekou Kaba’s free header from a corner should have been relatively easy to score but the tall midfielder could only steer it high and wide.

Ross wasn’t the only keeper to be tested; Danny Bracken expertly turned a neat drive round the post in a typically dangerous play from Wanderer’s impressive forward line.

Gary Ross did end the half making a spectacular flying save when Kevant Serbony let one rip from 20 yards. Both keepers can take credit for the 0-0 scoreline as the teams retreated for half time.

Then, within the space of five minutes, the game was settled; With 53 minutes gone, a long ball pumped forward with the wind assisting caught the Wanderer’s defender off guard and Emmanuel Akokhia capitalised by neatly slotting under Ross and giving Casuals the lead.

However, it felt like Corinth were still celebrating when Tom Tolfrey equalised at the other end. To make matters worse, Kev Terry put the nail in the coffin just four minutes later after finding space at the near post to lift the ball neatly over Danny Bracken. Casuals were shell shocked.

As already seen this season both at Hythe and against Ramsgate, Casuals weren’t about to lay down. Although their performance seemed to be a little more flat than of late, they dug in and lay siege to Dorking’s goal for the last 20 minutes. The introduction of Josh Uzun, Ben Cotton and Shaun Brown gave extra attacking options. A combination of great goalkeeping and resolute defending saw off attacks from Akokhia, Spencer, Terry Murray and even Danny Bracken, who joined the attack in the dying seconds. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be and Dorking Wanderers held on for the win in a keenly fought yet well-mannered, entertaining game.

The result sees Casuals drop from 1st to 3rd in the table and Dorking Wanderers move up into 2nd.

After the match, Corinth boss James Bracken spoke commented on the match.

“I'm not going to say it's not a fair result. We could've maybe nicked something in the last fifteen minutes. We’ve put a lot of pressure on them, missed one or two half chances that might have gone in on another day and to be fair to their keeper, he's pulled out two world class saves... one in the first half and one in the second.

“They're a decent side and it was a good game. I don't think we really put the intensity in like we can to the game until the last fifteen minutes, which was obviously a little too late.

“They say that ten minute period after you score a goal is always crucial and we’ve had a lapse in concentration. Their first, we earmarked the player not to give him even a couple of yards in the box, but we have and he’s had enough room to turn and shoot.

“There’s always positives to take out of this though, such as the response from everybody who upped their game when we’ve gone 2-1 down. Everybody to a man seemed to be able to go up a gear and put their foot in. There’s no cross words in the dressing room because they’ve been absolutely fantastic since I’ve been here and one defeat in a close game doesn’t change anything.

“It’s now how we respond on Saturday. Make sure we stay in the FA Cup, go on a run and that’s what matters.”

Casuals travel to the coast to face Pagham in the FA Cup on Saturday.
