The club will follow in the footsteps of the great Corinthians who promoted football around the world taking the beautiful game to Europe, South Africa, and of course, the Americas. However, one continent yet to fully embrace ‘soccer’ is the vast land of Antarctica.
Antarctica is the world's southernmost continent resting in the Antarctic Circle and surrounded by the Southern Ocean. With 5.4 million square miles of area, it's the 5th largest continent. It has a population of nearly 4,500 people yet football is very much an afterthought. It’s hoped that Corinthian-Casuals can spread the good word of the game to these people.
The continent does have a National team who play outside of FIFA, and the tour is hoped to raise the profile. For authenticity, games will be played on the icy fields with temperatures regularly reaching below -20°C and gale force winds – so not much different from King George’s at Tolworth.
Club spokesperson Charles ‘Smokey’ Bacon said “It’s wonderful to break the news of this pioneering tour, following in the footsteps of our Corinthian forefathers. Of course, we’re already prepared for the jokes regarding playing teams of Polar Bears, but the jokes on them, as they live in the Arctic, not Antarctica!”
“We’ll be playing penguins.”
“Am I going? Good lord, no! Too cold for that. And I’ve been to Brightlingsea! But good luck to the players.. We’ve chosen January 2023 as the time for our tour as it’s the warmest month in the South Pole. I mean, we’re not that cruel!
Striker Nathaniel Pinney said “it’s a great opportunity and for once, I can justifiably wear my gloves during a game.”
