Corinthian-Casuals bounced back from the slump in form with a 2-1 win over Bostik League high-flyers Tonbridge Angels on Tuesday night.
Casuals came into the match on the back of three defeats so three points were most welcome on this cold and misty evening in Tolworth.
Angels who sat in third were also suffering from indifferent form having lost four of the last five matches. Despite this, Steve McKimm’s big, physical side are always a threat. On paper, this was the toughest fixture in recent weeks.
The amateur’s only change from Saturday’s starting line-up was the addition of Mu Maan back into midfield with Max Oldham making way. There was a debutant spot on the bench for new signing Bradley Woods-Garness.
Corinth had to soak up good amounts of pressure in the first half hour as Angels looked to put a firm stamp on the game. But it was Casuals who struck first. Reece Hannigan popped up at the far post to head home Coskun Ekim’s deep free kick to give the home side the lead.
Angels were gifted an equaliser just after half-time when Juevan Spencer slipped on making a back-pass and Joe Turner capitalised after rounding keeper Danny Bracken. Tonbridge pinned back Casuals into their own half as they pressed for a second. Bracken was undeterred and his positioning and quick hands kept them at bay. His best was the point blank save from a corner, keeping parity in the scoreline.
The introduction of Oldham caused Angels problems down the right flank. His run and cross found Warren Mfula who converted in fine fashion from 15 yards. Injuring himself in the process, Mfula made way for Woods-Garness who had a solid chance to put the game to bed but his run through on goal was thwarted with a heavy touch allowing Jonathan Henly in the Angels’ goal to smother the attempt.
Time ran out for Angels to mount a comeback and the 2-1 win moves Casuals up to ninth in the table, just two points off the playoff spots.
